Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy backs Thabo Nodada for award

Posted: 20 April 2018 Time: 17:00

Benni McCarthy has described Thabo Nodada as “sensational” this season, and backs the Cape Town City midfielder following his nomination for the 2017/18 KICK OFF Footballer of the Year accolade.

The 22-year-old has featured in 30 matches across all competitions for the Citizens this season, his high work-rate and energy in the middle of the park earning many plaudits, along with numerous man-of-the-match awards.

Nominated as one of eight candidates in line to claim the 2017/18 KICK OFF Footballer of the Season prize, McCarthy feels the young midfielder is a worthy candidate following his telling contribution across the campaign.

“Thabo has been sensational,” McCarthy told “He’s been given the opportunity, and is very mature, grown up and is extremely brave. The only downside of him is that he doesn’t score enough goals, especially in the positions that we do try and play him. So that might be one of the lacking factors that might hamper him, but I think he’s a worthy candidate and he’s been exceptional, and a player for the future.”

McCarthy then likened Nodada to Chelsea and France international N’Golo Kante, and feels Nodada has the attributes to likewise make it in Europe.

“If you watch Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante, it’s like you’re watching Thabo Nodada,” McCarthy continued. “Yes, you’ve got your [Tiyani] Mabundas and that, but I’ve never seen a player in the league with that much energy. He doesn’t allow key opposition players to play, and goes about his business.

“He’s electric, and is a player for me to definitely watch out for the future, if not here, but there’s a place for him in Europe. With that kind of mentality, he’s a South African player that can go to Europe and succeed.”
