Vilakazi: You can't please everyone

Sibusiso Vilakazi says he holds no grudges against the Mamelodi Sundowns supporters who called for him to be substituted against Golden Arrows on Tuesday.

Vilakazi did not have a good night in front of goal in Sundowns' 1-0 victory and the supporters voiced their frustration when he could not bury an opportunity in the second half after Gaston Sirino had set him up with a delightful ball in the box.

Vilakazi was eventually taken off as Oupa Manyisa was introduced, but says the whole experience can only help him grow as a player.

“I take the boos as a confidence [booster] because I like the challenge. If you give me the boos, then that means I have to do much better. But at the same time you can’t make everybody happy,” Vilakazi says.

“When you are on the field of play you switch off and you are in a different zone. You try to focus on what you can improve on, so the boos are a motivation for me and I find it very interesting.”

Having come from Bidvest Wits, where fans hardly ever call for players to be substituted, ‘Vila’ has learnt a lot about playing for a club where the supporters demand good performances week in and out.

“I like it because you have to deliver. It takes you to a different level and it changes your hunger and attitude because you are expected to deliver in every game.

“As a player, most importantly, you have to deliver. So they [the supporters] are a second voice to my ear. My voice is the first and they are the second.”
