Absa Premiership match report Kaizer Chiefs v Platinum Stars 15 April 2018

Posted: 15 April 2018 Time: 13:31

Kaizer Chiefs laboured to a 1-0 victory over Platinum Stars in the Absa Premiership at FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Dikwena showed positive intent early on as they made forays into the last third but could not trouble Amakhosi goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.

Steve Komphela’s charges could not find a passing rhythm in the first quarter of the half and lost possession easily.

The Soweto giants’ first chance at goal only came in the 22nd minute with Joseph Molangoane picked out Ryan Moon, who could not get his header on target.

Ten minutes later, Castro came close to breaking the deadlock for the hosts with a low strike from range but Stars shot-stopper Mbongeni Mzimela made a good save at the bottom corner.

Roger De Sa’s men increased their tempo going forward with five minutes of the half remaining but could not find the penetrative pass as they went into the break scoreless.

Amakhosi got the breakthrough three minutes into the second stanza as Hendrick Ekstein toe-poked Molangoane’s cross into a gaping net from the centre of the box, 1-0.

Komphela’s men were seemingly already in their defensive mode after the hour-mark, as Moon made way for midfielder Siphelele Ntshangase.

Willard Katsande should have doubled Amakhosi’s lead 20 minutes before time after the Stars goalkeeper fumbled a cross inside the box but the Zimbabwean fired over the bar.

The home side were camped desperately inside their own half five with five minutes left to play.

Bernard Parker had a chance in the last minute of regulation time for Amakhosi after going clear on a counter-attack but fired wide as Komphela’s side managed to clinch victory.
