'Real must be ready to suffer in Europe'

Real Madrid will need to "suffer" if they are to overcome Bayern Munich and go on to lift the UEFA Champions League trophy, according to Los Blancos director Emilio Butragueno.

The Galacticos progressed to the semi-finals by the skin of their teeth, almost blowing a 3-0 first-leg lead against Juventus but ultimately going through thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo's 97rd-minute penalty in Madrid to win 4-3 on aggregate.

The LaLiga giants have been rewarded for their efforts with a last-four encounter against fellow European titans Bayern, and Butragueno knows the hard work really stars now as Real look for an unprecedented third successive Champions League crown.

“It’s almost impossible not to suffer when getting to this level of the competition,” Butragueno said on Real Madrid's official website.

“But if you have to suffer to be in the final, you have to suffer.

“It’s been a complicated road. We’ve come up against PSG and Juventus and now Bayern.

“They’re prestigious opponents, but we trust our players and for a long time now they have shown what they are capable of.”
