Orlando Pirates youngster Lyle Foster has revealed who his favourite player is on the local scene, and confesses his deep admiration for teammate Thamsanqa Gabuza.
Foster is currently in his first season with the Pirates first team, after being promoted from the youth academy in September, and has already garnered interest from abroad.
The 17-year-old striker has scored one goal and managed one assist in nine Absa Premiership appearances – totalling 160 minutes – with only one start to his name.
He also has four goals in five appearances for Amajita, with whom he went on to win his first piece of silverware at the COSAFA U-20 Champs in Zambia last year.
As an up-and-coming teenager, Foster looks up to Tottenham Hotspur and England striker Harry Kane, though admitting they do not possess similar styles of play.
On the local scene, his favourite player is rising star Thembinkosi Lorch, but admits he loves the type of character Gabuza has despite the constant backlash he faces.
“I love Gabuza. I love the way he plays and the way he holds up the ball, but my favourite player in South Africa at the moment is Thembinkosi Lorch,” Foster tells KickOff.com.
“He’s skilful, he can score goals and ‘Nyoso’ [meaning nonsense] – he makes nonsense. He’s a very, very good player.”
With Gabuza having come under fire for his lack of goals in recent seasons, Foster believes the former Golden Arrows frontman is a ‘top’ striker, whose sound advice he has welcomed.
“I don’t feel sorry for him because he doesn’t feel sorry for himself. I think the main thing with Gabuza is his mental strength. He takes things on the chin and just moves on,” he explains.
“He doesn’t care what the supporters say, he just sticks to his game, and when he scores you know his celebration. Gabuza is a top, top striker.
“He’s always told me when I’m not getting game-time, ‘Just stay calm, your time will come. If you don’t score in this game, you’ll score in the next. Just make sure you get into good positions to take shots at goal, and even if they don’t go in, one will’. I really appreciate that [support] from him.”
