Ajax clinch vital win over Wits

Posted: 11 April 2018 Time: 17:29

Ajax Cape Town boosted their survival hopes with a 1-0 win over Bidvest Wits at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday evening.

It was a positive start from both sides, where the hosts got the first opportunity through Yannick Zakri with a shot over the top after weaving through a body of defenders.

The visitors were content to sit back, absorb the pressure and gradually grow into the game, but were threatening in the process.

They found their first effort on goal through Vincent Pule, who pulled off an eye-catching save from Jody February after the 20th minute.

The Urban Warriors went close themselves a minute later courtesy of Zambian Rodrick Kabwe but, after beating a few defenders, he was unable to beat Darren Keet.

They were made to pay six minutes later when Zakri sprinted onto a Fagrie Lakay pass before slipping the ball past an on-rushing Keet.

Being susceptible to throwing away leads in recent games, a glance of the same cracks were beginning to appear as half-time draw nearer.

However, Thabang Monare was unable to make the most of a clear opportunity close to goal shooting poorly at February on the half-hour mark.

A minute to the break, February came up with another mind-blowing save to deny Lehlohonolo Majoro this time from finding the net.

Ajax made a substitution, albeit for tactical reasons with Sergio Kammies replacing Siyanda Zwane at the start of the second half.

A perfectly-landed delivery fell to Tercious Malepe, who fashioned himself to hit the net, but was unable to do so as he fired wide.

Time was running out for Wits after Keet pulled off a top quality save to deny Lakay’s fizzing shot.

Former Ajax skipper Granwald Scott gave his former team another scare with a shot from range, going inches away from the target.

The Urban Warriors looked to kill off the game late on when Zakri picked out Lakay, who failed to double the lead with a hoofing shot.

The win temporarily eases their relegation woes as they move to within just a point of SuperSport United in 14th place after Matsatsantsa held Orlando Pirates to a draw in the night’s other fixture.
