Orlando Pirates coach Micho Sredojevic refuses to be drawn into PSL Player of the Season debate

Orlando Pirates coach Micho Sredojevic has refused to be drawn into the debate on who deserves the coveted Absa Premiership Footballer of the Season award.

It has come to that point of the season where opinions are varied on who is most deserving of the individual crown, with Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane having the back of star striker Percy Tau.

Tau has undoubtedly been a pre-eminent figure in the Brazilians’ setup this season, leading their charge for the league title – contributing 22 goals of his side’s 41 thus far.

Meanwhile, Bucs midfielder Musa Nyatama has come to the fore for Sredojevic’s outfit – managing six man-of-the-match accolades and bagging the Absa Premiership Player of the Month prize for March.

Leading on from Mosimane’s comments, the Serbian admits it would be fulfilling to see a candidate from the Pirates camp take the individual honour but insists the team’s performance remains their primary focus this season.

“I have the highest degree of respect for my colleague Pitso Mosimane, with whom I have a history of 15 years of firm friendship,” highlighted Sredojevic.

“I know him since he first went to the CAF Champions League and when he was feeling the teargas in Dar es Salaam, when he brought Denis Onyango to South Africa.

“And we’re competing now, against a top team that is leading the table and are firm favourites to win the league, but I respect that he has his own opinion [regarding Tau].

“On our side we are looking and respecting the individual qualities of our players, and we’re happy to have a player [Nyatama] that has won six man-of the-match awards.

“We want for our team to be the best player of the season, and we are pushing as well that every individual put himself selflessly into the service of the team.

“I believe this is the mission we are looking at and targeting.”
