Mpumalanga Black Aces have confirmed the acquisition of former Moroka Swallows defender Tebogo Monyai ahead of the first games of the First Division Play-Offs semifinals.

Monyai had been training with the club for two months and impressed coach Sammy Troughton.

Aces face Carara Kicks over two legs in the semifinals, first on Sunday, May 24, at the Griffons Stadium in Welkom, and the return leg on Thursday, May 28, at the Sy Mthimunye Stadium in Mpumalanga.

Monyai’s contract will run until the end of June. He signed yesterday what could probably be the shortest contract in South African football history. But the team’s PRO, Thabo T-Bose Moroape, says it isn’t about the length of the contract.

“We have a few players sitting on two yellow cards and we want to make sure we are covered during the Play-Offs,” he says.

The Limpopo-born defender played for University of Pretoria before joining Swallows. He trained with Santos last year after leaving the ‘Dube Birds’ at the end of the 2007/08 season, but suffered a bad leg injury and missed out on a contract.

Meanwhile, Aces have received a major boost ahead of the first game against Kicks with the news that midfield genius Lindokuhle Mbatha has recovered from a knee injury.

“The ‘Little Napoleon’ [Mbatha] is back in full force after making a full recovery from his injury,” Moroape adds.

“He has been one of our best players this season, but has been troubled by the injury he picked up against Mamelodi Sundowns last year. He has been working hard at training and hopefully will be fit for the game.”
