Orlando Pirates reserve team captain Ricardo Lourenco expects title charge in MultiChoice Diski Shield

Orlando Pirates reserve team captain Ricardo Lourenco hopes the team can put the disappointment of their league campaign behind as they prepare for the MultiChoice Diski Shield.

The Young Buccaneers missed out on the Multichoice Diski Challenge title in the penultimate round, losing 2-0 to eventual champions Golden Arrows.

However, Pirates have the chance to still end the year with silverware in the Shield, although they face tough competition in the Central Pool, having been paired with Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs, as well as Bidvest Wits and Platinum Stars, but Lourenco remains confident of the team's abilities and chances.

“It’s a tough group," Lourenco admitted as quoted by SuperSport. “But the good thing is we come with an advantage as we haven’t lost to any of these teams this season. We want to win everything, as this is our last chance this campaign."

The Bucs do, however, have to come to terms with the loss of coach Rayaan Jacobs, who left the Mayfair giants to take over as second assistant coach at Cape Town City.

Philani Khubeka has since been appointed his successor for Pirates and will lead the team against Bidvest Wits on Saturday.

Lourenco said: “It was a big blow that coach Jacobs had to leave the club. He was actually the one that brought me to the club. I personally owe him…but its football at the end of the day, so there was nothing I could do.|

On Khubeka’s appointment, he said: “He’s really done well so far. He hasn’t lost in other tournaments, including the SAB league. He’s hard at winning because he did well during his time as a player, hence he’s instilled a lot of spirit in the boys."
