Absa Premiership match report Cape Town City v Golden Arrows 04 April 2018

Posted: 4 April 2018 Time: 17:25

Golden Arrows returned to winning ways in the Absa Premiership after defeating Cape Town City 1-0 on Wednesday night.

Lerato Lamola almost opened the scoring for Abafana Bes’thende in the seventh minute with a free-kick from the edge of the box but his strike missed narrowly over the bar.

Lyle Lakay was a handful on the left wing for the Citizens and in the 19th minute nearly got on the scoresheet with a left-footed strike that forced Maximilian Mbaeva into a good save.

Lakay had another chance for Benni McCarthy’s men five minutes before the break with a stinging shot from just outside the box but Mbaeva once again kept the visitors in the match.

The first stanza ended goalless, with City having the better chances while Clinton Larsen’s men hardly tested goalkeeper Sage Stephens.

However, Abafana Bes’thende got the breakthrough four minutes into the second stanza after Danny Venter sent Lamola through and he made no mistake from close range.

The Mother City club upped their tempo towards the hour-mark, showing an increased sense of urgency.

Lamola was a constant threat on counter-attacks for Arrows while City were penetrating the visitors through the wings.

Lamola had two clear-cut chances five minutes before time for Larsen’s men but failed to kill off the match.

However, the Durban-based side managed to hold on in the closing minutes to grab a vital win.
