Maritzburg United will face Bloemfontein Celtic without Pogiso Sanoka and Bevan Fransman

Posted: 31 March 2018 Time: 12:00

Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids expects Bloemfontein Celtic to have revenge on their minds when they meet in the Nedbank Cup at Harry Gwala Stadium today.

The Team of Choice registered an emphatic 4-0 victory over Phunya Sele Sele at the same venue in January, so the visitors will have a score to settle in the last eight clash, set to kick off at 15h30.

Maritzburg, though, are having a great season with Davids, who was finally given the job on a full-time basis, having previously played the role of caretaker. Davids has been set a target of reaching a cup final by chairman Farook Kadodia and the Nedbank Cup is the final opportunity to do so this season.

The furthest they have been in this competition is the semi finals in 2014 when they lost out to eventual champions Orlando Pirates.

“It was a tough draw and, like I said, they should’ve beaten us six over there [at Dr Molemela Stadium in the first half of the season],” Davids said.

“It’s difficult because we beat them four here [at Harry Gwala Stadium]. And for a team that has lost here they’ll come out guns blazing.”

Maritzburg, meanwhile, are thin at the back after it was confirmed that Brian Onyango has undergone surgery on his injured knee. What makes the headache even bigger for Davids is that right back Pogiso Sanoka and captain Bevan Fransman are suspended.

“Sadly we don’t have defenders and we have to look and see our options, [and] which formation we can play to be able to sort things out at the back.”
