SuperSport United midfielder Teboho Mokoena says they have to focus on getting themselves out of the relegation zone.
Matsatsantsa are currently sitting in 14th place on the Absa Premiership standings, just three points ahead of 15th placed Ajax Cape Town, who occupy the play-offs spot.
Matsatsantsa have only won two matches in the second half of the season – against Maritzburg United and Bloemfontein Celtic – and need to find some form to avoid the embarrassment of getting relegated.
They face fellow strugglers Polokwane City at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in their next league match on Wednesday, desperately needing to pick up points away from home.
SuperSport parted ways with head coach Eric Tinkler earlier this month and Kaitano Tembo has again come to the side’s rescue as the interim coach.
“Things did not go our way [under Tinkler]. I don’t blame him, he is a good coach and he has good experience. I don’t have bad things to say about him because he was motivating us. but we are trying our best because we have to move out of relegation. We don’t want to see ourselves fighting for relegation,” said Mokoena, who was part of the Bafana Bafana squad that won the Four Nations tournament in Zambia last weekend.
“We want to work hard to be in the top eight, so hopefully we will get there.”
They’ve made a promising start with Tembo, winning their two-legged tie against Petro de Luanda in the CAF Confederation Cup to edge themselves closer to the group stages.
They came from behind to beat Petro on home soil and that’s the kind of spirit they will need to move up the table.
