Furman: We need to take responsibility

SuperSport United captain Dean Furman says interim coach Kaitano Tembo is a calming influence when things are not going well at the club.

SuperSport parted ways with head coach Eric Tinkler earlier this month and Tembo has, not for the first time, taken over while Matsatsantsa look for someone who can replace the former Bafana Bafana midfielder.

Tembo has made a good start as interim boss, leading SuperSport to the CAF Confederation Cup play-offs stage, giving the club an opportunity to reach the group stages for a second year running.

Matsatsantsa made a good start to the campaign by winning the MTN8, before reaching the Confederation Cup final – where they lost to DRC giants TP Mazembe – but things have not gone so well for the club since then.

They are in a relegation battle in the bottom half of the table and need to get themselves out of trouble in the remaining six matches.

“Kaitano is always the calming influence in the team,” Furman said.

“We have to take responsibility for what happened this season and ultimately a man has lost his job over the fact that we have not been good enough on the pitch for a number of reasons and we are very sorry for that. But for us now we are full behind coach Kaitano and we have to be focused on the end of the season and push up as high as we possibly can.

“It hurts to see us in this position. With the quality we have, we feel we should not be losing. Now as seniors we need to pick up everybody in the team.”
