Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango believes Gaston Sirino will get used to playing on the continent

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango believes progressing to the CAF Champions League group stages is good for Gaston Sirino to adapt to football on the continent.

Sirino joined Masandawana during the January transfer window and has settled in well, forming good partnerships with players such as Percy Tau and Themba Zwane.

He was one of Sundowns’ best players in their 2-0 victory over Rwandan side Rayon Sports in the first round, as the 2016 champions booked their spot in the group stages for a third consecutive year.

Sundowns have been drawn into group C with defending champions Wydad Casablanca, Horoya and AS Togo-Port.

Sirino, the Uruguayan who is highly rated by Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane, will get more opportunity to show what he can do for Sundowns in the group stages.

The likes of Aubrey Ngoma, Jeremy Brockie and Siyabonga Zulu, players who joined Sundowns in January, will also be looking to find their feet in the Sundowns team and the Champions League will give them that opportunity. Brockie and Zulu played in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages with SuperSport United and Platinum Stars respectively last year, so they would know what to expect.

“Sirino did not know much about African football, but he played a good game in Rwanda. He missed a couple of chances, which is okay but we believe the team is coming together well. It’s unfortunate the season will be over soon, but the more we stay on the continent the more they gain confidence and get more game time. We need the new players to freshen up the team and we them to help us to get to where the club wants to be.”
