Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango believes consistent performances in the CAF Champions League help raise his status as one of the best shot stoppers on the continent.
Onyango was named the 2016 African player of the year after the Brazilians were crowned African champions that same year. Onyango, who has also done well for the national team of Uganda, is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers on the continent but knows that he has to be consistent to ensure that does not change.
“It has always been my dream to play in the Champions League. My dream was to be in the group stages, but I have done more than that, so this is what’s been on my mind and it keeps me going. There’s a lot of challenge on me that I need to perform every time I play.
“I know anyone can do my job, but if I do it better it makes it easier and it gets me to be known more and more on the continent.
“I want to perform well all the time, but sometimes when you play on the continent you need to use experience because the pitch is not proper and all that. I have been to all these countries and I do my best to help the club because as a foreigner you need to help the club when it comes to continental football.”
Sundowns qualified for the group stages and have been drawn into group C with defending champions Wydad Casablanca, Horoya and AS Togo-Port.
