Hlanti: Baxter has assured players

Bidvest Wits defender Sifiso Hlanti says Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter has assured them that they will always be part of the team if they perform well, regardless of which clubs players play for.

Bafana are fresh from winning the Four Nations tournament in Zambia, beating Zambia 2-0 in the final at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Saturday. Baxter’s men had beaten Angola 6-5 on penalties to qualify for the final.

"It was a success, considering that the coach wanted to prepare the young boys and allow them to be surrounded by senior players, which is something that helped us a lot as a team," Hlanti tells KickOff.com.

"I could see that the young boys were happy to win the tournament. It made them realise that playing for the national team is not only about the challenge, but it's also a good thing because at the end of the day it helps them learn a lot of things.

"It was a good thing to win because the cup was competitive, you could see that the other countries also wanted to win it. But for us that was a very good thing, and we were able to win it away from home. Both games were difficult."

Hlanti, who played in the first game against Angola, says he was happy with his performance as it showed he is making progress as a Bafana player.

Orlando Pirates left back Innocent Maela played the second match against Zambia.

"I played in the first game and I was happy with my performance, as it showed that there's progress in being the part of the national team.

"He [Baxter] told us that if a player is doing well he calls him to the national team and that he doesn't have that thing of saying so and so is playing for which team, he looks at your performance.

"According to him knowing how to deal with the pressure of playing in the PSL doesn't mean you are good enough, you need to continue working hard."
