Zambia coach Wedson Nyirenda praises Bafana Bafana performance in four-nations final

Zambia national team head coach Wedson Nyirenda has conceded that Bafana Bafana outsmarted his side in their four-nations cup final over the weekend.

Bafana avenged their CHAN qualification defeat of last year as they walked away 2-0 victors over Chipolopolo at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Saturday evening, as they were crowned champions of the inaugural event.

Despite the presence of Orlando Pirates duo Justin Shonga and Augustine Mulenga, as well as Spartak Moscow reserves striker Fashion Sakala and former Platinum Stars forward Brian Mwila, the hosts were unable to breach the Bafana backline.

Nyirenda admitted the defeat was painful in front of their home support, but felt Stuart Baxter’s young side showed more match intelligence as they did well to absorb pressure  before using their pace and skill to good effect.

“I think it was a very painful defeat, a game that I think we had controlled in most parts of the 90 minutes, but South Africa were too clever in the way they handled the pressure,” said Nyirenda.

“When we put them under pressure, they would come out and they looked so dangerous – the way they strung together passes and then they found themselves in a scoring position.

“In the first half they looked very strong when they got a chance through Tau, who missed it, but I think we missed most of the chances we created. If we were to bury them it was going to be dead in the first half.

“But we played a very good game and there’s nothing we can worry much about. The loss came but I think we can take a lot out of it.”
