Argentina have announced that striker Sergio Aguero will not feature against Spain on Tuesday after being released from the camp before their trip to Madrid.
Head coach Jorge Sampaoli cast doubt over the Manchester City forward's involvement in the upcoming FIFA international break on Thursday when he confirmed a knee injury would rule him out of Friday's 2-0 victory over Italy.
"We have been talking to team doctors at Manchester City and evaluating the situation to see if there is any possibility he can play any part in the two games," the former Sevilla boss said.
Now the 29-year-old has been sent back to the Citizens training camp in Abu Dhabi, where he is set to go an intensive rehabilitation programme with the Premier League side.
"Sergio Aguero will be released from the group to continue the recovery of his left knee," the South American giants confirmed via Twitter.
It will come as a major blow to the FIFA World Cup preparations for La Albiceleste with Aguero in scintillating form this season, scoring 30 goals and registering seven assists in 37 games across all competitions.
