Bafana Bafana midfielder Dean Furman says they want to go into the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in confident mood, so they need to end the Four Nations tournament on a high.
Bafana are set to take on hosts Zambia in the final of the competition after they beat Angola 6-5 on penalties on Wednesday. With quite a few youngsters getting into the team, the experienced Furman says they have an opportunity to prove themselves to coach Stuart Baxter ahead of the Afcon qualifiers in September.
“It’s an opportunity for the youngsters to show the coach and the nation what they are about. We’ve seen them at their clubs and now the next challenge is to take those performances in the national team. I am sure they will be up for the challenge,” the hard working midfelder
“Going into the end of this year’s Afcon qualifiers we want to go in with a confident mood, rather than to go in on the back of a few defeats which we have experienced in our last couple of camps.
Furman is one of the experienced campaigner in a young Bafana squad which consists of players such as Siphesihle Ndlovu, Teboho Mokoena and Aubrey Modiba.
“I never thought I’d be one of the older players, looking at the younger players and trying to help them. That’s the position I find myself in and I am always grateful for a call-up and I give my absolute all for the national team,” the SuperSport United captain says.
“We need to make the younger players feel comfortable because it’s a high pressure environment – the media, the nation - and everyone is breathing down your neck. So we have to give the players confidence to go express themselves.”
