Witbank Spurs have not been able to register former Baroka FC captain Olaleng Shaku.
The National First Division outfit announced the signing of Shaku, who was axed by Bakgaga for allegedly drinking on the job, two weeks ago. Spurs chairman Themba Mafu confirmed the signing to KickOff.com until the end of the season, but it seems they have hit a brick wall in their attempts to register the experienced defender.
“I have no comment on that. We will release a statement once it’s all clear. He’s not registered, that’s all I can say,” Mafu said when he was contacted by KickOff.com this morning.
According to the NSL handbook, a player can only be registered outside the transfer period if he receives a clearance when the window is open.
The hard-tackling Shaku was declared a free agent after the window closed – together with goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke who is awaiting offers – so he can only play for a club next season.
The NSL handbook states the following:
31.6. Only the following categories of Players may be registered by a Member Club outside of the registration periods stated above:
31.6.1. A Player who was not under contract with any club at the time that the previous registration period closed.
It's unclear if Spurs will hold onto the defender for next season.
