Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt picks Mamelodi Sundowns to pip Orlando Pirates to Absa Premiership title

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt believes Mamelodi Sundowns' quality and experience will see them getting over the finish line first in the Absa Premiership title race.

Orlando Pirates are breathing heavily down the necks of Sundowns at the moment. The Buccaneers are just a point behind the leaders after their 2-1 victory over Golden Arrows at Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday.

Hunt, who won the title with the Clever Boys last term, feels Sundowns know how to win the title.

“Look, I still think Sundowns [should win it]. If you look at their squad, they got a very good squad of players,” Hunt said after he was named coach of the month for February at PSL offices on Monday.

“You know when it comes to these times, you need to have the know how because you need to understand what it needs and sometimes a point is good when you get to the end of the season, which we discovered last year.

“But there is a lot of know how at Sundowns and they got a quality that's for sure.”

The former SuperSport United coach, however, also feels that there will be a lot of twists and turns before the end of the season.

“The key is you need to be consistent. Sometimes you find players doing some strange things when you get to that time of the season.

“The last five games there will be strange results, there is no doubt about that every year. It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, you will always get strange results.

“I will never forget the one where we [SuperSport] were chasing and Sundowns lost to Cosmos. Cosmos then got relegated at Rand Stadium and we won the league that year.

“I mean you will never bet against them [Sundowns] losing that game, so anything can happen.

“Remember the one year where Kaizer Chiefs had to win needing one point from the last four games and didn't get anything.”
