Moeneeb Josephs laments CAF Champions League disappointment

Bidvest Wits goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs has admitted that the team “blew” their chance to make club history in the CAF Champions League.

The reigning Absa Premiership champions were once again sent packing from the continent’s premier club competition by Angolan champions Primero de Agosto, after a penalty shootout defeat in the final qualifying round.

Last year, Wits fell at the same hurdle, but understandably so, to eventual runners-up and record eight-time African champions Al Ahly.

While many would have fancied Wits’ chances to achieve a maiden qualification to the competition group stages, given their less-acclaimed opponents, Josephs, who was deputy to Darren Keet in the first leg, has argued that this route was not much easier.

“I wouldn’t say we had an easier route, but I do agree that we blew it. It was a great opportunity again to get into the group stage, but as the saying goes, ‘Hopefully we learn from that and carry on,’” said Josephs.

The 37-year-old former Bafana Bafana shot-stopper feels a lack of experience was their main stumbling block, as players failed to hold their nerve in the sudden-death shootout.

“It was an opportunity missed, it’s just that you need experience in a competition like this and we lacked a lot of the know-how of going about things,” he added.

“I’m sure, if you have a look at Sundowns, they knew exactly how to ensure they go to the next stage because of their experience in this competition.

“It would have been nice for Bidvest Wits to be representing South Africa in the Champions League, but it wasn’t to be and we’ll have to look ahead to the next time again.”

Wits have now dropped into the CAF Confederation group stage play-off round, hoping to make it fourth time lucky in their fourth successive year in the competition.
