Mbombela United boss won't blame coach for embarrassing defeat

Mbombela United boss Oupa Mathebula has blamed match officials, and not coach Ashwin Sutton, for his side’s 7-1 defeat to Highlands Park over the weekend.

Mbombela have slipped out of the race for the title after making a promising start to the campaign. They are currently in ninth spot on 31 points, seven behind second and third placed sides Black Leopards and Real Kings FC.

Mathebula, who was sitting on the bench next to head coach Ashwin Sutton, was not pleased with the officiating in the match.

"Yes [Sutton’s job is safe]," Mathebula tells

"I was there on the bench, what else could this guy do? I asked myself if I was in his shoes what is it that I would have done differently? Because in the first half the players worked hard, so everything just went bad in the second half.

"We are being robbed, even if we played the whole day the result wouldn't have changed, it would have been the same outcome.

"I mean it's impossible to go into half-time at 1-1, and all of a sudden in the second half it's a slaughter like this? It proves that something went horribly wrong.

He went on: "In the second half it was the dubious decisions from our brothers who always decide the games and become men of the match. It was the referees who decided to spoil the game."
