Orlando Pirates winger Thembinkosi Lorch recently said he was not ready to play for Bafana Bafana, but that was in fact not the case.
Lorch has admitted that he was focused on Pirates' Nedbank Cup match against Cape Town City and did not want to talk about the national team.
The former Cape Town All Stars man has been one of the in-form players in a Pirates side that has been transformed under the guidance of Micho Sredojevic and his assistant Rhulani Mokwena.
Lorch has registered four goals and two assists in the second half of the season, earning himself a spot in Bafana coach Stuart Baxter’s side for the four nations tournament in Zambia.
Before going into camp to join his teammates, Lorch scored in Pirates’ 2-1 victory over Golden Arrows at Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday. He will no doubt be high on confidence as he looks to impress Baxter over the next few days.
Lorch, who has scored in Pirates' last three league matches, has explained why he said he is not ready for the national team.
“But to tell you about the call up I was expecting it. Why I said I wasn’t expecting it is because I was focusing on the Nedbank Cup game, so I didn’t want to talk about it,” he said.
“You can see now I’m starting to score, but I’ve been playing like this.”
Lorch, who was recalled from loan at Chippa United halfway through last season, says Micho and his technical have brought unity into the squad.
“I think now we are together as a team. The coaches brought that spirit in the team,” he added.
Other Pirates players who will be away on international duty are Marshall Munetsi (Zimbabwe),
Augustine Mulenga and Justin Shonga (both Zambia).Pirates’ next league match will be at Orlando Stadium against Bloemfontein Celtic on April 4.
