Chippa United returned to winning ways in the Absa Premiership with a 1-0 victory over Free State Stars on Saturday afternoon.
Chippa came in having conceded more than they have scored after 23 matches. As for Stars, they came with one of the best offensive records, having garnered 24 goals to date.
The Chilli Boys were the first on the front-foot when Thabo Rakhale was sent clear by Daniel Akpeyi, but after beating two defenders, he blasted over the top.
Two minutes later, the best chance of the opening 10 minutes fell to Thabang Klaas but his effort was too weak to pose any problems to Akpeyi.
Dangerman Linda Mntambo looked for his third goal of the campaign after shooting from outside the block, but Badra Ali Sangare pulled off a block.
The deadlock was broken two minutes to resumption after Abel Mabaso found space in the box to side-foot home Mntambo’s pass.
Stars brought on Maxime Cosse from the bench for Makhehlene Makhaula towards the midway point in the second half in search for the equaliser.
Having failed to test Akpeyi for the duration of the game, Mohamed Anas looked to get the best out of the Nigerian shot-stopper with a free-kick, but he failed to make the most of the situation.
In the end, Vladislav Heric’s men held on for the full complement of points and his first win since his re-appointment.
