Kaizer Chiefs defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele target a continental spot next season

Posted: 17 March 2018 Time: 10:00

Kaizer Chiefs defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele says their target is to qualify for the CAF Champions League or Confederation Cup next year.

Chiefs’ hopes of winning the league title lie in the hands of others and not their own, so Mphahlele is focusing on a second place finish or glory in the Nedbank Cup to qualify for one of the continent’s club competitions.

Finishing second would book them a place in the Champions League, while Nedbank Cup glory guarantees a spot in the Confederation Cup.

“In football you always have to find something to play for, the possibilities are we might not finish first,” Mphahlele said.

“We can finish second or third. That should be the goal. If we don't finish first, we must finish second. That’s the target, and also the Nedbank Cup.”

Despite Chiefs seemingly not taking the CAF competitions seriously in the past, Mphahlele is adamant they compete should they qualify.

“Ever since I came here, we never actually played CAF [competitions]. We never actually spoke about it but obviously, if it comes, we will give it everything that we have.

“I don't know about the seriousness of the club but if we do qualify for the Champions League, we will have a go on it because there is more at stake now.”

The defender added that they are inspired by Sundowns’ good run in the Champions League.

“We should get inspired that Bidvest Wits is there, Sundowns is doing well in the Champions League and that should also give us a push a to say ‘we are at the same level with Sundowns, we can go to Africa’.

“But they have the experience, they have been going there for the past four years, so we also need to get into that space that level. They know what is at stake, but let’s qualify first and then we will talk about it.”
