Absa Premiership match report Maritzburg United v Polokwane City 16 March 2018

Posted: 16 March 2018 Time: 18:44

Maritzburg United continued their amazing run of form with a 2-1 victory over Polokwane City in the Absa Premiership on Friday.

The irrepressible home side were looking to clip the wings of the visiting outfit, who just came off a 2-0 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic away from home.

It was put in motion seven minutes from the start when Pogiso Sanoka blasted home a cracker that stunned all inside the venue.

Later on, they almost doubled their lead after Fortune Makaringe played in the returning Andrea Fileccia, but the Belgian saw his shot saved by goalkeeper George Chigova.

At the midway point, the Team of Choice provided little room to manoeuvre and this opened up opportunities at goal for players like Deolin Mekoa, who duly obliged but found his effort wide.

The hosts were dealt an injury blow after Brian Onyango was stretched off the field following a bad tackle and was replaced by Rheusch De Reuck.

Pressure continued to filter in from the hosts, as Mekoa was hacked down in the box and required a penalty only for the officials to wave away the appeal.

With the game slowing down and chances slow in coming through, United fired in a second after Siphesihle Ndlovu showed good control for a cool finish amidst an on-rushing Chigova on 75 minutes.

City pulled one back after Muhammad Sulumah chested in a cross from the left three minutes to the end, setting up a nervy end in the process.

However, the Fadlu Davids' men held on for the win and moved into the top three.
