SuperSport United midfielder Teboho Mokoena says he did not expect a Bafana Bafana call-up, but he's ready to grab the opportunity.
The junior international has been included in Stuart Baxter’s 25-man squad for the upcoming four nations set to take place in Zambia. Bafana will face Zimbabwe, Angola and the hosts, as they prepare for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers later this year.
The 21-year-old Mokoena, who has made 24 appearances in all competitions for Matsatsantsa this season, is seen as one for the future.
Baxter has called up other youngsters such as Siphesihle Ndlovu, Reeve Frosler, Ryan Moon and Phakamani Mahlambi.
“I am very happy because it’s a big achievement for me. I did not really expect it, but I have to take it and embrace the challenge I am going to face. I am ready and I believe I am going to come back more improved and I’ll compete. I have to do my best and God will do the rest,” Mokoena said.
Mokoena is not new to international football, having represented the national under-20 team. He featured at the Under-20 Fifa World Cup in South Korea last year.
He has also played a lot of football on the continent with SuperSport in the CAF Confederation Cup.
“Playing abroad gives you more knowledge and experience, especially in the World Cup. It was more challenging than playing in Africa. I will see when I get there. I am excited.”
Mokoena will get to work with Baxter, who gave him his SuperSport debut last season.
“Coach Stuart knows my strengths and weaknesses, so we will see how it goes.”
