Orlando Pirates have been dealt a blow ahead of their Nedbank Cup last 16 clash against Cape Town City with the news that Luvuyo Memela has been ruled out.
Memela, who was backed by many to get a Bafana Bafana call-up, failed a late fitness test before the team flew out to the Mother City yesterday. The Soweto giants face the Citizens at Cape Town Stadium tonight (19h30).
According to the Pirates website, Memela has been receiving treatment on an ankle injury he sustained in a friendly match during the weekend.
The Pirates medical team is working tirelessly to ensure the former Cape Town All Stars player is available for the side’s next Absa Premiership match against Golden Arrows. They visit Arrows at Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday (20h15).
Pirates also provided an update on goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands, who is making progress on his finger injury.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns shot stopper has started to participate in select team training drills which involve passing and distribution. Sandilands, however, has not been cleared to take part in shooting drills which require him to catch balls.
Right back Diamond Thopola, meanwhile, has been cleared to train with the rest of the team, which gives coach Micho Sredojevic more options in defence.
