Manchester United captain has announced his decision to retire at the end of the season

Manchester United captain Michael Carrick has announced he will hang up his boots at the end of the current campaign after 12 trophy-laden seasons at Old Trafford.

Carrick, 36, has featured 463 times for the Red Devils since making a £18m switch from domestic rivals Tottenham in 2006 and has won every trophy on offer including five Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.

However after suffering a heart scare last year, the former England international says he feels the time is right to finally hang up his boots after 705 professional appearances for United, Spurs and his first club West Ham United.

"There comes a time when your body tells you it is time to stop. That is where I am at," he told reporters, as quoted by BBC Football. "After the heart issue, I had two or three days thinking 'am I going to carry on?' I got back fit and wanted to finish on my own terms.

"I need to keep myself fit and ready. Hopefully, I can get some game time and I am still enjoying training. I am trying to help a lot more because I understand where I am at."

Upon the news of his retirement here are some of the best quotes from three elite Premier League managers;

Former manager Sir Alex Ferguson: "I think Michael's the best central midfielder in English football. I think he's the best English player in the game."

Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola: "He is one of the best holding midfielders I've ever seen in my life by far. He's the level of Xabi Alonso, Sergio Busquets in Barcelona and Munich."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger: "One of my regrets is never having had him as a player because I think he was one of the greatest players in English football."
