Baroka FC are determined to hold on to technical director Doctor Khumalo for as long as possible.
Chairman Khurishi Mphahlele has been impressed with the work Khumalo has done since arriving at the club at the start of the season. Many had seen Khumalo as a replacement in waiting for former head coach Kgoloko Thobejane, but he made it clear that he is not at the club to take anyone’s job.
A chance to take the job of head coach presented itself when Baroka suspended and then fired Thobejane recently. However, the former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach has been happy to continue in his current role.
Khumalo has been credited for giving players such as Gift Motupa and Talent Chawaphiwa the freedom to use their talent to benefit the team, and Mphahlele has also pointed at how the team has been a lot more organised since his arrival.
“He has made a lot of changes. When you look at the way the team is playing, you will see that we are not like last year. We play with shape and we can defend now. We are very happy with what he is doing and we would be glad to keep him for more seasons,” he says.
Baroka have given interim coach MacDonald Makhubedu a chance to prove himself until the end of the season, but Mphahlele reveals coaches have been sending their CVs to take the role left vacant by Thobejane.
“He [Makhubedu] has the rest of the season to prove that he can be a boss. The CVs have been coming. They were coming even when Kgoloko was still here. That is not a problem for us. Makhubedu still has his job as an assistant, but if he is ready to be the man in charge, then we will give him a chance to show us.”
