Mamelodi Sundowns defender Wayne Arendse says they are not happy with CAF Champions League result

Posted: 9 March 2018 Time: 18:00

Mamelodi Sundowns' Wayne Arendse admits the goalless draw away from home against Rwandan side Rayon Sports in the Champions League is a dangerous result to take into the return leg.

The two sides met in a first round, first leg encounter at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on Wednesday, but there was no winner as Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane lamented his side's relaxed display in the first half.

An away goal for Rayon would put Sundowns under pressure, so the 2016 African champions have to ensure they are tight at the back to avoid a shock exit.

Arendse, who partnered Brazilian Ricardo Nascimento in central defence in midweek, says they were disappointed to come back home without an away goal to bank on, but he still believes they can get the result they need on home soil to progress to the group stages for a third consecutive year.

“Obviously we would have loved to score. It was 50/50, so we are not really happy with the result because we should have buried the game. Now it’s up to us to score at home. The result is fine, but we are not really happy,” the former Santos defender tells

“It can be dangerous because they might get a freak goal and then it would put us on the back foot. Now we know that we need to score not just one, but two or more. It’s also vital that we keep a clean sheet because we can’t even allow them a sniff [at goal].”

Sundowns returned to the country on Thursday and will next play ABC Motsepe League side EC Bees in the Nedbank Cup last 16 on Tuesday, before hosting Rayon at Loftus on the weekend.
