AC Milan legend Andriy Shevchenko lauds former teammate Gennaro Gattusso management

Posted: 8 March 2018 Time: 12:00

AC Milan legend Andriy Shevchenko says head coach Gennaro Gattuso is 'changing the face' of the club and creating optimism amongst the fallen giants of Italian football.

Shevchenko, who's now the head coach of the Ukraine national team, represented Milan between 1999 and 2006, winning five major honours and scoring 175 goals under the management of Carlo Ancelotti.

However, the Rossoneri have not reached the highs of yesteryear with their last top-three finish coming in the 2012/13 Serie A season.

But after a 12-game unbeaten run under the tutelage of the fiery Gatusso, Shevchenko believes his former teammate is bringing back the Milan of old.

"Rino Gattuso has really changed the face of Milan," Shevchenko told ESPN ahead of the Europa League clash with Arsenal on Thursday. "It's almost like two different teams.

"With [previous manager Vincenzo] Montella, Milan signed 11 players and it was a time of transition. It's always difficult when so many players come to find the perfect solution. Any manager needs time to adapt players and bring them into [the] team in the perfect positions.

"The second stage, when Rino came, it has really changed the mentality of the players. Milan are starting to look like the Milan of the old days. They are compact and aggressive and very angry for the win.

"They will be confident against Arsenal. At the moment Milan looks very good."
