Pitso Mosimane is delighted Mamelodi Sundowns did not concede away from home against Rayon Sports in the Champions League, but was not impressed with his side’s first-half performance.
The sides played to a goalless draw in the first round, first leg encounter at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali last night. It’s clear Rayon cannot be underestimated and Sundowns should guard against doing so when they host the return leg on March 18.
“I was not happy with my team in the first half. They started to relax thinking that it was going to be easy but it did not turn out like that because the opponents raised the standards,” Mosimane told the media in Kigali after the match.
“It was an open game, which is how I expect Rayon Sports to play. They are a good playing team.”
Mosimane, who took charge of his 50th CAF club match last night, reserved special praise for goalkeeper Denis Onyango as well as central defenders Wayne Arendse and Ricardo Nascimento for making sure that Rayon’s speedy attackers did not find the back of the net.
“I think my two centre-backs and the goalkeeper played well to defend against the fast strikers and fast attack of Rayon. I am happy we did not concede a goal, so from my side we will see in the second leg.”
Sundowns will have to make sure they keep another clean sheet on home soil and bury their chances in front of goal.
