UEFA Champions League match report Manchester City v Basel 07 March 2018

Posted: 7 March 2018 Time: 22:28

Manchester City suffered a 2-1 loss to FC Basel at the Etihad Stadium but still progressed to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after winning the tie 5-2 on aggregate.

Pep Guardiola's charges ran riot in the first leg, having won 4-0 in Switzerland last month.

City took the lead after just eight minutes when some slick passing by Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane set up for Gabriel Jesus for the simple finish in the box.

The visitors did not sit back as they leveled matters in the 18th minute with Mohamed Elyounoussi rifling the ball home from close range.

City had a chance to restore their lead in the 31st minute as Sane picked out Ilkay Gundogan in the box, but the latter's strike was brilliantly blocked by Fabian Frei.

Basel showed a good account of themselves in the first half and were full value for their equaliser heading into the break.

The Citizens pushed for a second goal in as the second stanza went on, but they failed to carve out clear-cut openings.

However, it was Basel who went ahead on 72 minutes as Michael Lang blasted pass Claudio Bravo after being picked out by Elyounoussi.

City were in full control in the remaining 18 minutes of the second stanza as they pushed for an equaliser.

In the end, though, the hosts failed to find a leveler as Basel held for the win, although City still progressed the last eight.
