National First Division club Witbank Spurs have signed former Baroka FC captain Olaleng Shaku, but there could face some problems with the acquisition.
Shaku was released with goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke by Bakgaga for undisclosed reasons last week.
Spurs boss Themba Mafu confirmed to KickOff.com that they have signed the experienced centre back, but says they are yet to register the player with the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
“Yes we have signed him. He’s an experienced centre back. You can’t take it away from him," Mafu says.
But according to the NSL handbook, a player can only be registered outside the transfer period if he receives a clearance when the window is open. Shaku was declared a free agent after the window closed, so he can only play for a club next season. He can sign a contract with the club, but he cannot be registered this season.
The NSL handbook states the following:
31.6. Only the following categories of Players may be registered by a Member Club outside of the registration periods stated above:
31.6.1. A Player who was not under contract with any club at the time that the previous registration period closed.
Mafu says it’s possible for Shaku to play for the club this season.
“As long as you are in a profession you can do your job. We have signed him, but we have not yet registered at the PSL. We just signed this afternoon.”
