May Mahlangu’s Dinamo Bucuresti had their last chance of winning silverware this season dashed on Tuesday night following their exit from the domestic Romanian Cup.
Bucuresti, who finished eighth in the regular league season and will now participate in the relegation round of the Romanian league format, had a chance to put their disappointing league season behind them as they faced off against Craiova – who finished third in the league – in their cup quarter-final match-up on Tuesday evening.
Mahlangu was named in the starting line-up for the 23rd time this season, and lasted the full 90 minutes for his side, who were undone by a 56th-minute Nicour Bancu strike to lose 1-0 on the night, thus exiting the tournament they last won six years ago.
Bucuresti’s focus will now be on remaining in the country’s top-flight, as they battle it out against all the bottom eight placed clubs in a mini relegation play-off league.
Elsewhere, Kamohelo Mokotjo enjoyed a solid 78 minutes in the centre of the park, boasting the highest pass completion rate of any of his teammates as Championship club Brentford claimed a valuable 2-0 win away at Burton Albion, leaving them 10th on the table, five points adrift but with a game in hand over sixth-placed Middlesbrough, who lie in the last promotion play-off berth.
In Egypt, having not been registered for this year’s CAF Champions League campaign, Phakamani Mahlambi had to watch from the stands as African giants Al Ahly humbled Gabon’s FC Mounana 4-0 in their first leg Champions League first round qualifier played at Cairo’s International Stadium.
