Antonio Flores bemoans unrealistic expectations at Super Eagles

Posted: 6 March 2018 Time: 17:30

Axed Super Eagles coach Antonio Flores says the National First Division club’s management think they have a squad as good as Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Flores and his assistant Tshegofatso Mashego were shown the door by the club yesterday after they lost 3-0 to Black Leopards on Sunday.

Eagles are in 15th position on the table, just three points ahead of bottom-placed Mthatha Bucks.

Flores, who is the cousin of former Watford and now Espanyol manager Quique Sanchez Flores, says the club expected miracles with limited playing personnel.

“Me and Mashego, we parted ways with the club,” Flores tells

“The reason being, this chairman of the club thinks they have a squad like Barcelona or Real Madrid. They think every game they’re going to win. They are rushing things too much.

“I told them the truth, that we have a limited squad but we’re going to fight in every game.

“Super Eagles is not Black Leopards that can win the league. This is a team that can avoid relegation until the last moment and they had to adhere to all of that.

“But this is the life of a coach, but they are rushing too much to get results as I said. Because even Mashego as assistant, he was good, a good analyst of the opponents. Players were good with us and in the training sessions they were taking my knowledge, but the boss is the boss.”

Flores, who previously coached Ugandan side SC Villa and Sandawana of Lesotho, was in charge of 15 games in all competitions. He won four, lost seven and drew four.
