Mamelodi Sundowns will play on grass but have been training on astro turf

Posted: 6 March 2018 Time: 13:00

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango says they have no complaints about training on astro turf, even though they are going to play on grass against Rayon Sports.

Sundowns arrived in Rwanda on Saturday to start preparing for tomorrow’s first round, first leg CAF Champions League clash against Rayon at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.

They will only get to train on grass for the first time today, as it's mandatory for teams to train at the match venue the day before the game.

“It’s not the same [as training on grass], but we have no choice. We are in a country where they do not have a lot of grass pitches. The astro turf is not bad,” Onyango said.

“It’s one of the new ones they used in the CHAN tournament [in 2016], so it looks better. We will have a chance to go to the main stadium today, which is proper and is good for football. We won’t complain on the pitch, we will focus on the game and get the result.”

Onyango has stressed the importance of winning the match, so that they return to Absa Premiership football with momentum. Sundowns are top of the league standings and are determined to get back the title Bidvest Wits snatched away from them last season.

“So far everything [in Rwanda] has gone well. It’s a chilled country, very clean and they welcomed us very well. We are focusing on the game because we know how hard it will be, especially because it’s one game to the group stage. It never gets easy, but we will do our best to get into group stages.

“We want to keep the winning momentum in the team because we have a few games to go in the league and this will push us towards the end of the season.”
