Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana ready for Rayon Sport battle

Posted: 6 March 2018 Time: 16:00

Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana says there’s a lot of excitement in camp as they make a return to the CAF Champions League in an attempt to reclaim the title.

The Brazilians surrendered their title last year when eventual champions Wydad Casablanca knocked them out in the quarterfinals, but they are back to fight for the biggest prize in club football on the continent.

Their campaign starts in Rwanda against Rayon Sport, who beat LLB Academic FC 2-1 on aggregate in the preliminary stage to book a spot in the first round.

The first leg will be played at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali tomorrow and then the Absa Premiership leaders will host the second leg at Loftus Stadium on March 18. A win over both legs will see Sundowns qualifying for the group stages for a third consecutive time.

“Being in the Champions League again is something we are happy about. Remember we get a lot of lessons in the Champions League, not only football lessons, but life lessons too. We get to see how other people live in their countries, so it’s exciting to be back in the Champions League,” Kekana tells KickOff.com.

The experienced campaigner says they have watched videos of the opposition’s matches, so they have an idea of what to expect.

“We have a responsibility to win our games. We have seen the videos of the team we are playing against, so I think the clips we have are enough for us to know what type of team they are. We are ready for the match,” the Bafana Bafana midfielder says.

Sundowns, meanwhile, have Anthony Laffor available for the tie against the Rwandan side. Laffor has proven to be a key player for the Brazilians on the continent and they will be hoping he can make a mark, if he gets a chance to play.
