Pitso Mosimane says Mamelodi Sundowns not looking back

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane insists they are untroubled by the Absa Premiership title-chasing pack.

Sundowns put out a dominant display to beat AmaZulu 3-1 at a packed King Zwelithini Stadium on Friday evening, asserting their standing atop the standings.

Despite pressure from the likes of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, whose Soweto Derby victory on Saturday kept them within reach of the Brazilians with seven games to go, ‘Jingles’ says there are focused solely on their own race.

“We’re not focused on the other teams. The problems come when you start looking back [at the chasing pack],” Mosimane said.

“You are running the race and you are ahead, so once you start looking back you’re only giving yourself unnecessary pressure.

“We’re just focused on our lead and we keep going. Don’t worry about what you can’t control; you can’t control what other teams do.”

Many have labelled Chiefs and Pirates as Sundowns’ main championship rivals, but Mosimane refuses to write off Maritzburg United and Free State Stars, who have both since leapfrogged Amakhosi into third and fourth with their respective results on Saturday.

“People say there’s only two teams who have a chance [of catching us]. Most of the time we talk about the other two teams [Chiefs and Pirates], but you also see Maritzburg and Free State Stars popping up,” he added.

“I like when Maritzburg and Free State Stars pop up because people are focusing on us [‘The Big Three’], and then suddenly Free State Stars pops up and then Maritzburg pops up.

“So, we’re just focused on our own race and we leave what is not in our control.”

Sundowns' next league clash is at home to Chippa United, who have just replaced Teboho Moloi with Vladislav Heric as head coach, on April 4.
