Spanish LaLiga match report Real Madrid v Getafe 03 March 2018

Posted: 3 March 2018 Time: 22:22

Real Madrid returned to winning ways in LaLiga with a 3-1 victory over 10-man Getafe at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Los Blancos were looking for a response, having lost 1-0 to Espanyol on Tuesday night.

Madrid started on the front foot with Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale looking lively early on.

Nacho had a chance to give Zinedine Zidane’s men the lead in the 17th minute after unleashing a right-footed strike that forced Getafe goalkeeper Damian Martinez into a fine save.

Gareth Bale sent the hosts ahead in the 25th minute with a strike from close range after being picked out by Isco in the box.

Zidane’s troops had their tails up and started to play with more confidence after half-an-hour, although their play was still patchy.

Ronaldo eventually doubled the home side’s lead on the stroke of half-time with a sublime finish from inside the box after beating two players en route to finding the bottom corner, 2-0.

It went from bad to worse for Getafe after they were reduced to 10 men two minutes into the second stanza as Frenchman Loic Remy got his second yellow card for a flailing arm that caught Nacho in the face.

Getafe were piling men forward towards the hour-mark, despite playing with a man down and ran the risk of being caught on a counter-attack by Madrid.

However, the visitors were awarded a penalty in the 65th minute. Portillo held his nerve from the spot-kick to pull one goal back for Getafe, 2-1.

In the 78th minute, Ronaldo sealed the victory for the home side with a fine header at the near post following a cross from Marcelo.

That was the last piece of action in the second stanza, as Los Blancos now shift their focus to Wednesday's UEFA Champions League tie against Paris Saint-Germain.
