Orlando Pirates coach Micho Sredojevic says the experience Happy Jele brings to the team cannot be bought.
ele missed a big chunk of the season through injury but has returned at a crucial time as the Buccaneers are challenging to win the Absa Premiership title.
In his first game back in the starting line-up, Pirates were beaten 3-0 by Ajax Cape Town in the Mother City on January 31, but he did not play the entire 90 minutes.
Since then, however, the 31-year-old has played three full matches and has captained the team on two occasions, while Thabo Matlaba has been on the bench.
As second-placed Pirates prepare to take on Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto derby at FNB Stadium today (15h30), they will be counting on Jele to keep a close eye on the likes of Leonardo Castro and Ryan Moon, who has been Amakhosi’s form player in 2018.
“It’s very important to have him in the team. He’s got the touch of seniority and maturity. He gives that touch of continuity as well because he was won many trophies and he has been around. He knows how to do it," Sredojevic tells KickOff.com.
"You can't go to the shop and buy the experience. You need to put mileage in the legs and that’s what we are looking for.”
Jele will have to guide his fellow defenders in a game the Buccaneers want to win to keep up with Mamelodi Sundowns at the top.
