AmaZulu striker Siyabonga Nomvethe gears up for Mamelodi Sundowns showdown

Posted: 2 March 2018 Time: 11:00

AmaZulu's veteran striker Siyabonga Nomvethe has promised the team will make life tough for Mamelodi Sundowns tonight at Umlazi’s King Zwelithini Stadium.

All eyes are on Sundowns as they aim to extend their four-point lead at the summit ahead of Saturday's showdown between title rivals Orlando and Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.

Pitso Mosimane’s men also have a score to settle after losing 2-1 to Usuthu at Lucas Moripe Stadium in October last year.

Nomvethe, 40, scored a PSL record-extending 120th goal on that occasion and hopes to have a similar impact this evening as his 10th-placed side chase a top-eight finish with eight games left.

“It’s a game and it’s not like it is going to be easy," Nomvethe said. "It’s going to be difficult for both sides because they want three points and we also want three points.

“I think we have to keep working hard so that we can see ourselves in the top eight. But we respect them of course, it’s a big team and we know they’re challenging for the league title. So us, we’re challenging for the top eight.

“I think it’ll be a big match and one may feel they’re playing away... we play at home, but the atmosphere will grant us to grab the three points, especially when you dream to be in the top eight.”

Bhele, the oldest active PSL player, has previously inflicted pain on Sundowns when he was at Kaizer Chiefs and at Moroka Swallows.

In the late 1990s, Bhele hit a brace for Chiefs against the Brazilians. He was also part of Zeca Marques’ Swallows side in 2012 that defeated Sundowns twice in the season in which the Dube Birds won the MTN8 trophy.

The ex-Bafana Bafana forward has downplayed his record against Downs, insisting he always gives his all no matter the opponent.

“I’m always focused when I’m playing, it’s not like I’m choosing the games. Every game I have to do my best so that it’ll help the team.”

Kick-off is at 18h00.
