FC Barcelona were held to a 1-1 draw by Las Palmas at Estadio de Gran Canaria on Thursday evening.
The Catalan giants carved out the game's first chance after eight minutes but Leandro Chichizola produced a good save to deny Luis Suarez from close range.
Barca continued to dominate in the opening stages of the encounter and it was only a matter of time before they went ahead.
The opening goal arrived on 21 minutes, with Lionel Messi sending a fine curling free-kick beyond Chichizola from the edge of the box.
The home side, meanwhile, had to wait until the 40th minute to register an effort at goal, with Oghenekaro Etebo forcing goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen into a save with an effort from distance.
However, Las Palmas were awarded a penalty shortly after the break when Lucas Digne was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.
Jonathan Calleri stepped up and made no mistake from 12-yards to level matters for the hosts on the hour mark.
Philippe Coutinho was introduced and nearly made an immediate impact when he delightfully played in Messi, who was denied by a last-ditch challenge from Matías Aguirregaray.
Unfortunately, the final 20 minutes of the half failed to provide any goal-mouth action as Las Palmas sat deep and frustrated the visitors to claim a vital point in their pursuit to avoid the drop.
