FC Barcelona forward Lionel Messi may be leading the scoring charts in LaLiga this season but the five-time Ballon d'Or winner has some competition to secure the coveted Golden Shoe award.
As of March 1, there are four players ahead of the Argentina international, with two Premier League stars, one Serie A forward and a striker from Ligue 1.
In the race for the award, a points system calculates the goals and the strength of the league in order to rank the overall winner.
Currently, Messi has 22 goals and sits on 44 points, while Liverpool's Mohamed Salah is two points ahead of the 30-year-old with 46, due to his 23 goals in the Premier League.
Lazio superstar Ciro Immobile is level on points with Salah with an identical record while Edison Cavani is in second place with 48 points, after scoring 24 goals in 25 games for Paris Saint-Germain.
Harry Kane leads the charts with an identical record to the Uruguay international but due to the rating of the Premier League over the French top-flight, Kane holds the slender advantage.
Top five contenders:
1. Harry Kane, Tottenham, Premier League, 24 goals, 48 points
2. Edinson Cavani, PSG, Ligue 1, 24 goals, 48 points
3. Ciro Immobile, Lazio, Serie A, 23 goals, 46 points
4. Mohamed Salah, Liverpool, Premier League, 23 goals, 46 points
5. Lionel Messi, Barcelona, La Liga, 22 goals, 44 points
