Mamelodi Sundowns' Hlompho Kekana sees recent draws as points gained, not dropped

Posted: 1 March 2018 Time: 10:30

Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana says they are not too disheartened by the points they dropped last week against Free State Stars and SuperSport United.

Absa Premiership leaders Sundowns drew both their home matches against Ea Lla Koto and Matsatsantsa, which gave Orlando Pirates a chance to move within four points of the leaders, as the Soweto giants crushed Chippa United 4-2 at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday.

Heading into this weekend’s matches, the race for the title is expected to be even more intriguing. Sundowns are away to AmaZulu at King Zwelithini Stadium (18h00) tomorrow night, while the second-placed Buccaneers host rivals Kaizer Chiefs, who are in the mix in third, in the Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday (15h30).

The Brazilians were beaten 2-1 by Usuthu in the first half of the season at Lucas Moripe Stadium, but that does not necessarily mean they should be worried about being on the losing side again tomorrow. They have, in fact, picked up more points away from home this season, which is unlike them.

They have registered eight victories on the road this season, compared to the four at home.

“We are aware that we dropped points against AmaZulu in the first round. We feel we deserved three points in that game, but we won’t be out for revenge. We are at a stage where we know every point is important, so we need to work hard,” Kekana tells KickOff.com.

“Yes, we dropped points in our last two matches against SuperSport and Free State Stars, but we don’t see it that way. We are looking at the fact that we added points to the ones we already had. We are happy that we did not lose those matches because those points are important to our title race.

“There’s a lot of football to be played, so we don’t want to talk about the title now. We just want to see ourselves winning the games we play.”
