Orlando Pirates coach Micho Sredojevic guards against league title talk

Posted: 1 March 2018 Time: 14:00

Orlando Pirates coach Micho Sredojevic does not want to put pressure on his players by saying the Buccaneers will win the Absa Premiership title this season.

Both players and coaches at Pirates have tried their best to downplay their chances of lifting the biggest prize in South African football, but being second on the standings means they cannot run away from the fact that they are title candidates.

Pirates, who are four points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, have suffered just one defeat in 2018 and have an opportunity to make up for last season’s disastrous campaign by winning the title this term. They are in a good position and a win over Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday (15h30) could spur them on to win a fifth PSL title.

Micho, however, says he won’t talk about winning the championship so that his players can play with freedom on the pitch.

“With all due respect, we have no right to speak about that [the title] because it will lock the legs of our players. Let them feel free, let them express themselves. Why put pressure on them? Pressure stays with me and coach Rulani [Mokwena]. That’s our fuel, pressure gets the best out of us,” the former Ugandan national team coach says.

“Let the players be responsible and let them enjoy themselves. This is not belittling the badge. It’s taking the pressure away from the team.”

He adds: “We enter every match with the intention to win. Maybe a time will come where we will openly tell you that we are going for the trophy.”
