Ajax Cape Town moved out of the relegation zone after defeating SuperSport United 2-0 at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Ajax looked for an early opener after Yannick Zakri managed to wind his way through the defence, but failed to beat Ronwen Williams.
They put their best foot forward once more a minute later which again involved Zakri, who put in Toriq Losper to force Williams into a save following a wicked deflection off Clayton Daniels.
SuperSport came close to going in front following Azubuike Egwukwe’s header as they started to press more freely in the final third.
At the other end, Losper found space on the left after beating the offside trap and managed to strike the post for the second time.
The Urban Warriors continued to press forward as the 20-minute mark approached, which forced the visitors to desperate defending to deny Fagrie Lakay from writing his name in glory.
The goal continued to elude them after Zakri failed to profit from a header which glanced across goal from Mosa Lebusa’s cross.
United’s best chance so far fell to Grant Kekana following a goalmouth scramble but his attempt was cleared off the line.
The long-awaited drought finally ended for Muhsin Ertugral’s charges five minutes from the break courtesy of Lakay, who blasted home from the edge of the box after being set up by Losper.
Eric Tinkler’s troops were still finding it tough to get a foothold on the game, but did manage to ask questions of Brandon Peterson through Thabo Mnyamane’s free-kick after 60 minutes.
It certainly wasn’t enough for Tinkler, who decided to inject more pace to their game with the arrival of Thuso Phala for Egwukwe three minutes later.
He again acted 10 minutes later with the introduction of Mogakolodi Ngele for Mnyamane with the game spiraling out of their control.
However, the coach's hopes of a come back were ended by Mario Booysen, who tapped in at the far post after a howler from Williams.
Zimbabwean Tendai Ndoro looked to add to their woes after going one-on-one with Williams, who redeemed himself with a stunning save for a corner as Ajax moved off the bottom two.
