Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Lucky Maselesele says a goal for Ryan Moon in the Soweto Derby will confirm that he can be relied on to be Amakhosi’s number one striker.
Moon has been the form player for Chiefs in the second half of the season, scoring four goals in his last six Absa Premiership matches to keep Amakhosi’s title hopes alive.
Maselesele knows all about scoring against Pirates, having done so in the Vodacom Challenge and Telkom Charity Cup in the past.
“Fortunately for me it [the goal in the Vodacom Challenge] was my first goal against Pirates. It gives you so much confidence. Ryan has been doing well and scoring for Chiefs, so getting a goal in the Derby will lift him up even more,” Maselesele says.
“Scoring against Pirates comes with pressure and fame, so he has to keep his feet on the ground and keep doing the job he is doing. After scoring in the Derby you feel you can play anywhere in the world. The stadium is packed, so it’s awesome.
“If he scores, it will confirm that he has arrived and it will confirm that he is number one and the club can depend on him.”
Maselesele has been impressed with the progress of the 21-year-old forward, but says he still has a lot to learn to become a complete striker.
“He is one for the future and he is a player that is a work in progress. If you score goals as a striker, then you are doing your job.
“He has the movement, the eye for goal, can create opportunities for himself and he makes it easy for midfielders to find him. He’s got the height and that’s why he makes sure he competes in the air. Age-wise he has a lot to learn, but he is on the right track. If he keeps his feet on the ground, then the future is bright.”
